Catalani, Alfredo (b Lucca, 1854; d Milan, 1893). It. composer. Friend of Boito who wrote lib. for La Falce (Milan 1875). Operas show affinity with Ger. romantics, e.g. Weber and Marschner, and were Elda (1876, rev. 1889 as Loreley), Dejanice (1883), Edmea (1886), and La Wally (1891), the last-named being the best and most popular of his works, highly esteemed by Toscanini, who named his daughter after it.
