d Frankfurt, 1798). Ger. violinist, composer, and conductor. In 1759 became leader of Mannheim orch., becoming dir. 1774. Dir., court mus. at Munich, 1778. Mozart praised his conducting. Wrote operas, ballets, syms., sinfonie concertanti, and chamber mus. His son Karl (
b Mannheim, 1771;
d Munich, 1806) succeeded him as dir. of Munich orch. 1800.
