Bardi, Giovanni de', Count of Vernio

Bardi, Giovanni de', Count of Vernio (b Florence, 1534; d Rome, 1612). It. nobleman and soldier in whose palace in Florence a group of poets and musicians met regularly in the later years of the 16th cent., this giving rise to what are considered to have been the first operatic perfs. He wrote at least 2 libs. and comp. madrigals. See Camerata.
