Ahna, Pauline de (b Ingoldstadt, 1863; d Garmisch, 1950). Ger. soprano who married Richard Strauss in 1894 and became notable exponent of his Lieder, many of which were written for her. Début Weimar 1890 (Pamina). Sang at Bayreuth (1891). Created role of Freihild in Guntram, Weimar 1894. Christine in Intermezzo is a portrait of her, as (less directly) are several other of Strauss's operatic heroines. Known for her waspish tongue and massive (probably calculated) indiscretions; her coquettish nature is instrumentally portrayed in her husband's Ein Heldenleben and Symphonia Domestica.
