penicillin
penicillin A type of antibiotic produced, for example, by fungi of the genus
Penicillium. Penicillins are active against certain types of bacteria (mainly Gram-positive species; See
GRAM-REACTION) and are widely used in the treatment of diseases in animals caused by those bacteria. (Pencillin G was one of the first antibiotics to be used for the treatment of disease.) There is now a wide range of chemically modified penicillins, each with slightly different properties. They function by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial
cell walls.
