amino acid

amino acid An organic compound containing an acidic carboxyl group and a basic amino (NH2) group. The general formula for naturally occurring amino acids is R-CH(NH2)-COOH, where R is a variable grouping of atoms (fundamentally, a carbon chain or ring). Amino acids constitute the basic building blocks of peptides and proteins and are classified as:(a) neutral, basic, or acidic; or(b) non-polar, polar, or charged (depending on the net electrical charge resulting from the configuration of the molecule).
