Oxylobium
Oxylobium (family Leguminosae, subfamily Papilionatae) A genus of small, xerophytic (see
XEROPHYTE) shrubs in which the leaves are
pinnate or
simple, usually alternate, and
stipulate. The flowers are irregular, coloured red or yellow, and held in terminal or
axillary racemes. The
calyx lobes overlap; often the upper 2 are broader. The
petals are often clawed at the base, with a heel and wings all of the same length. There are 10 free
stamens. There are 24 species, all endemic (see
ENDEMISM) to Australia and found throughout the continent in dry scrub and heathland.
