status asthmaticus

status asthmaticus (stay-tŭs ass-mat-ik-ŭs) n. a severe attack of asthma. Patients are very breathless and may die from respiratory failure if not treated with inhaled oxygen, bronchodilators, and corticosteroid therapy; sedatives are absolutely contraindicated.
