haematemesis

haematemesis (heem-ă-tem-i-sis) n. the act of vomiting blood. The blood may have been swallowed but more often arises from bleeding in the oesophagus, stomach, or duodenum. Common causes are gastric and duodenal ulcers and oesophageal varices (varicose veins).
