calcitonin

calcitonin (thyrocalcitonin) (kal-si-toh-nin) n. a hormone, produced by the C cells of the thyroid gland, that lowers the levels of calcium and phosphate in the blood. A recombinant form of calcitonin is given by injection to treat hypercalcaemia and Paget's disease of bone. Compare parathyroid hormone.
