Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) (kroits-felt yak-ob) n. a disease in which rapid progressive degeneration of brain tissue results in dementia and eventually death. It is caused by an abnormal prion protein (see spongiform encephalopathy). Most cases occur sporadically but some forms of CJD are inherited and a few are acquired. variant CJD (vCJD) the human form of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE): a form of CJD believed to be acquired by ingestion of infected beef products.
