lateral-line canal

lateral-line canal A sense organ in fish consisting of a groove on the head and along each side of the body that contains sensory hair cells. These are sensitive to variations in water pressure and are used to detect moving objects, such as predators, and to monitor progress through water during swimming. The canals and the hairs within them collectively form the lateral-line system.
