haploid Describing a nucleus, cell, or organism with a single set of unpaired chromosomes. The haploid number is designated as
n. Reproductive cells, formed as a result of
meiosis, are haploid. Fusion of two such cells (see
fertilization) restores the normal (
diploid) number.
