cytokine Any soluble factor secreted by cells of the lymphoid system that acts as a signal to other lymphoid cells. There are two categories:
lymphokines, secreted by lymphocytes; and
monokines, secreted by macrophages. However, certain cytokines, notably
interferons and
interleukins, are secreted by both lymphocytes and macrophages.
