Medawar, Sir Peter Brian

Medawar, Sir Peter Brian (1915–87) British immunologist. Born in Brazil and educated at Oxford, he held posts in zoology there and at Birmgingham and London. He turned to medical biology and studied rejection in tissue grafts, experimenting with mouse embryos and demonstrating the phenomenon of acquired immunological tolerance. For this work he shared the 1960 Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine with Sir Macfarlane Burnet.
