thyroid hormones The thyroid is an endocrine gland situated in the neck, which takes up iodine from the bloodstream and synthesizes two hormones, tri‐iodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4, tetraiodothyronine). The active hormone is T3; thyroxine is converted to T3 in tissues by the action of a selenium‐dependent enzyme. T3 controls the basal metabolic rate.
