saltlicks An adequate intake of sodium is necessary to all animals. Grass is relatively poor in sodium, and its high potassium content increases sodium excretion. This loss causes a craving for sodium which is satisfied by licking on natural outcrops of salt‐rich rock or artificial salt crystals.
