Wernicke‐Korsakoff syndrome The result of damage to the brain as a result of
vitamin B1 deficiency, commonly associated with alcohol abuse. Affected subjects show clear signs of neurological damage (Wernicke's encephalopathy) with psychiatric changes (
Korsakoff's psychosis) characterized by loss of recent memory and confabulation (the invention of fabulous stories). See also
beriberi.
