MOOD. In traditional GRAMMAR, a term for a form of the verb that affects the general meaning of the sentence and for the sentence or clause type in which it occurs. Three moods are customarily recognized for English: the
INDICATIVE (
God helps us); the
IMPERATIVE (
Help us); and the
SUBJUNCTIVE (
God help us).
