GENTEELISM

GENTEELISM. A semi-technical term for both genteel behaviour in using language and a word or phrase used for genteel reasons: for example, the substitution of tummy for belly. Genteelisms are generally EUPHEMISMS used for evasive ‘polite’ purposes, such as bathroom, lavatory, powder room, restroom, toilet for a place for urinating, defecating, and washing.
