fustian †coarse cloth; thick twilled cotton cloth XII; as adj. fig. bombastic, pretentious XVI. — OF. fustaigne (mod. futaine), repr. medL. (tēla) fustānea, (pannus) fustāneus, i.e. cloth of Fostat, suburb of Cairo, from which such cloth was exported.
