fiddle stringed musical instrument played with a bow. OE. fiðele = (M)Du. vedel (veel), OHG. fidula (G. fiedel), ON. fiðla :- Gmc. *fiþula of obscure orig.; cf. VIOL, VIOLA2, VIOLIN, and medL. vidula, fidula, vitula, etc.
Hence vb. XIV. fiddler OE. fiðlere.
