-ar repr. L. -āris belonging to, of the kind or form of, as in globulāris GLOBULAR, lunāris LUNAR, stellāris STELLAR; synon. with -AL1, but replacing it where l preceded. The regular F. descendant of L. -āri- is -ier (AN. -er), whence -er in Eng. adoptions, which was often assim. to L. with -ar; e.g. L. scholāris, AN. escoler, ME. scoler, later scholar. Learned F. formations have -aire (cf. -ARY). In beggar, liar, pedlar, -ER1 has been assim. to this suffix.
