quadrivium a medieval university course involving the ‘mathematical arts’ of arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, and music; with the
trivium comprising grammar, rhetoric, and logic, these subjects formed the
seven liberal arts. The name is Latin, and means literally ‘the place where four roads meet’.
