laugh and the world laughs with you; weep and you weep alone proverbial saying, late 19th century (a quotation from the poem ‘Solitude’ by the American poet Ella Wheeler Wilcox, 1855–1919). The saying is an alteration of the sentiment expressed by the Roman poet Horace (65–8 bc) in Ars Poetica, ‘men's faces laugh on those who laugh, and correspondingly weep on those who weep,’ and echoes the biblical passage in Romans 12:15, ‘Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.’
laugh to scorn ridicule someone or something; a biblical idiom, as in Job 12:4 and Matthew 9:24.
let them laugh that win triumphant laughter should be witheld until success is assured; the saying is recorded from the mid 16th century. Later related sayings are he laughs best who laughs last and he who laughs last, laughs longest.
