happy call no man happy till he dies proverbial saying, mid 16th century; earlier in classical Greek, and traditionally said by the Athenian statesman Solon to the fabulously wealthy king of Lydia, Croesus. Croesus had asked Solon who was the happiest man he had ever seen, and expected the Athenian to reply that it was Croesus himself. Sophocles in Oedipus Rex has the related, ‘deem no man happy, until he passes the end of his life without suffering grief,’ and Ovid in Metamorphoses has, ‘nobody should be called blessed before his death.’
happy-clappy belonging to or characteristic of a Christian group whose worship is marked by enthusiasm and spontaneity; the term is an informal and mildly disparaging one for a style of worship associated with the evangelical movement.
happy families a children's card game played with special cards in sets of four, each depicting members of a ‘family’, the object being to acquire as many sets as possible.
happy hunting ground a place where success or enjoyment is obtained, originally referring to the optimistic hope of American Indians for good hunting grounds in the afterlife.
if you would be happy for a week take a wife; if you would be happy for a month kill a pig; but if you would be happy all your life plant a garden proverbial saying, mid 17th century; the saying exists in a variety of forms, but marriage is nearly always given as one of the ephemeral forms of happiness.
