gilt gilt-edged relating to or denoting stocks or securities (‘paper’) that are regarded as extremely reliable investments; gilt-edged was originally used literally of writing-paper or the pages of books.

gingerbread, cake made with treacle or syrup and flavoured with ginger, was traditionally made in decorative forms which were then gilded.
