eggs don't put all your eggs in one basket you should not chance everything on a single venture, but spread the risk. Saying recorded from the mid 17th century; reworked by Mark Twain in Pudd'nhead Wilson (1894) as, ‘Put all your eggs in the one basket, and—watch that basket.’
kill the goose that lays the golden eggs destroy a reliable and valuable source of income; the allusion is to one of Aesop's fables, in which a man killed the goose which laid a single golden egg each day in the belief that he would find a number of eggs inside it, and instead through greed lost his source of wealth.
