drug on the market, a an unsaleable or valueless commodity. Drug in the sense of ‘a commodity for which there is no demand’ is recorded from the mid 17th century, but its history does not make it unequivocally clear that it is the same word as the medicinal substance. The phrase is recorded from the mid 19th century (earlier also as a drug in the market).
