credit where credit is due, give proverbial saying, late 18th century; in its earliest form, the proverb often had honour (meaning ‘obeisance, homage’). There may have been an echo of the translation of Romans 13:7 in the Rhemish Bible (1582), ‘Render therefore to all men their due:…to whom honour, honour.’
