Orestes the son of
Agamemnon and
Clytemnestra, and brother of
Electra. Having grown to manhood in exile, he returned to Argos and killed his mother and her lover Aegisthus to avenge the murder of Agamemnon; pursued by the avenging Furies for the crime of matricide he fled to the shrine of Apollo at Delphi, where ultimately he was pardoned by Athena. The story is the subject of Aeschylus's trilogy, the
Oresteia.
