Livingstone, I presume, Dr the words with which in 1871 Henry Morton Stanley (1841–1904) greeted the Scottish missionary and explorer David Livingstone (1813–73), who in 1866 had gone in search of the source of the Nile. As a newspaper correspondent Stanley was sent in 1869 to central Africa to find Livingstone; he discovered him two years later in poor health at Lake Tanganyika.
