Exclusion Bill a bill of 1680 seeking to bar James Duke of York (the future James II, brother of Charles II) from the succession, on the grounds of his being a Roman Catholic; those opposed to him supported Charles's illegitimate son, the
Duke of Monmouth, as representing a Protestant succession.
