Aesop (6th century bc), Greek storyteller. The moral animal fables associated with him were probably collected from many sources, and initially communicated orally; they were later popularized by the Roman poet Phaedrus, who translated some of them into Latin. Aesop is said to have lived as a slave on the island of Samos.
