water moccasin (cottonmouth) Venomous semi-aquatic snake of se USA. It is a pit viper, closely related to the copperhead. When threatened, it vibrates its tail and holds its white mouth open. Length: to 1.2m (4ft). Family Viperidae; species Agkistrodon piscivorus.
