ukiyo-e
ukiyo-e Japanese paintings and woodblock prints that were prevalent in the Edo period (1615–1867). Their subject matter included people engaged in everyday activities as well as Kabuki actors. Moronobu (
c.1625–95) is generally considered the originator of the true
ukiyo-e print; he gained renown for his woodcut illustrations for popular literature. Other famous
ukiyo-e printmakers were Harunobu,
Hiroshige,
Hokusai, Kiyonaga, Sharaku, and
Utamaro.
