spectroscopy Branch of
optics dealing with the measurement of the wavelength and intensity of a
spectrum. The main tool is the
spectroscope. It produces a spectrum and a
spectrograph photographs it. An analysis of the spectrogram can reveal the substances causing the spectrum by the position of emission and absorption lines and bands. Analyses are used for determining the composition and motion of stars and other celestial bodies. A
spectrometer is a calibrated spectroscope capable of precise measurements.
