rifle
rifle Firearm with spiral grooves (rifling) along the inside of the barrel to make the bullet spin in flight, thereby increasing range and accuracy over that of a smooth bore weapon. Not until the Minié rifle (1849) were rifled weapons widely used. During the 19th century, breech-loading and magazine rifles developed, and after World War II, assault rifles, capable of fully automatic fire, came into general use.
