radar
radar (acronym for
radio
detecting
and
ranging) Electronic system for determining the direction and distance of objects. Developed during World War II, it works by the transmission of pulses of
radio waves to an object. The object reflects the pulses, which are detected by an antenna. By measuring the time it takes for the reflected waves to return, the object's distance may be calculated, and its direction ascertained from the alignment of the receiving radar antenna.
