parabola Mathematical curve, a
conic section traced by a point that moves so that its distance from a fixed point, the focus, is equal to its distance from a fixed straight line, the directrix. It may be formed by cutting a cone parallel to one side. The general equation of a parabola is
y = a
x2 + b
x + c, where a, b, and c are constants.
