sex hormone. First produced by a girl at
puberty, oestrogen leads to the development of the secondary sexual characteristics: breasts, body hair and redistributed fat. It regulates the
menstrual cycle and prepares the
uterus for pregnancy. It is also a constituent of the contraceptive
pill.
