merchant bank One of a number of UK specialist banks that offer financial services, primarily to corporate customers. They rose to prominence in the 18th and 19th centuries, involved in overseas trade. Today, they provide a range of services including: operating as issuing houses; sponsoring capital issues; offering corporate advisory work, such as advising on mergers and acquisitions; asset management; and foreign exchange.
