melanoma Type of skin
cancer. They are highly malignant tumours formed by melanocytes, cells in the skin that make the dark pigment
melanin. They may also occur in
mucous membranes and in the eye. Untreated, they may spread to the liver and lymph nodes. Excessive exposure to sunlight has been cited as a causative factor. Treatment is usually by surgery.
