medieval music Music produced in Europe during the later Middle Ages, c.1100–1400. It was dominated by Christian liturgical chants. Troubadours or minnesingers transmitted secular songs. In the 14th and 15th centuries, guilds of professional musicians were formed, and musical notation became more sophisticated, enabling composers to transmit whole works to later generations.
