lutetium (symbol Lu) Metallic element of the
lanthanide series, isolated in 1907 from the element ytterbium. Chief ore is monazite (phosphate). It is used in the
cracking of petroleum. It was named after the Latin name for Paris (
Lutetia) by French chemist Georges Urbain who discovered it. Properties: at.no. 71; r.a.m. 174.97; r.d. 9.835; m.p. 1656°C (3013°F); b.p. 3315°C (5999°F); most common isotope Lu
175 (97.41%).
