calcium carbide (calcium acetylide) Chemical (CaC2) made commercially by heating coke and calcium oxide (CaO) in an electric furnace. It reacts with water to yield ethyne. Calcium carbide is also used to manufacture ethanoic acid and ethanal, as well as fertilizers.
