arsenic (symbol As) Semimetallic element of group V of the periodic table, probably obtained in 1250 by German chemist Albertus Magnus. Arsenic compounds are used as a poison, to harden lead, and to make semiconductors. Three allotropes are known: white arsenic, black arsenic, and a yellow nonmetallic form.
