agnosticism Philosophical viewpoint according to which it is impossible either to demonstrate or refute the existence of a supreme being or ultimate cause on the basis of available evidence. It was particularly associated with the rationalism of Thomas
Huxley and is used as a reasoned basis for the rejection of both Christianity and
atheism.
