Whitehead, A.N. ( Alfred North) (1861–1947) English philosopher and mathematician. In his ‘philosophy of organism’, Whitehead attempted a synthesis of modern science and metaphysics. The system is presented in his Process and Reality (1929). His three-volume Principia Mathematica (1910–13), written in collaboration with Bertrand Russell, is an important work in the study of logic.
