Victor Emmanuel II
Victor Emmanuel II (1820–78) King of Italy (1861–78). In 1849, he succeeded his father, Charles Albert, as King of Piedmont-Sardinia. From 1852, guided by his able minister, Conti di
Cavour, he strengthened his kingdom, formed a French alliance, and consequently defeated Austria (1859–61). In 1861, he assumed the title of King of Italy. Rome became his new capital after French troops withdrew (1870).
